Not Just Black and White
While Black remains a cold weather staple in everyone’s winter wardrobe, dark hues and boxy silhouettes are taking over the Fall/Winter 2014 runways. Stark black, grey and navy will be dominant colors for the season, straying from the pastels we embraced for Fall/Winter 2013 and returning to a slightly altered traditional cold weather look.
Designers are playing with textures and prints, seen in the black and white asymmetrical striped prints and textured navy fabrics on dresses and jackets from Balenciaga’s Pre-Fall 2014 collection. Emanuel Ungaro showcased a combination of snakeskin, chevron and animal prints, all mixed and matched with jackets, pants and tops for the season. Alexander Wang’s Pre-Fall 2014 collection played with the grey scale, showing black, white and shades of grey, monochromatic plaids. All three designers featured boxy jackets and skirts, keeping fabrics away from the body to create a more androgynous look.
Oxford flats as well as chunky heels that balance this season’s boxy silhouettes are the perfect choice when accessorizing this trend. Bold jewelry is a must when polishing this look, as anything dainty here will feel overwhelmed by the oversized nature of the trends this season. Pieces like Ana Khouri’s bold yet sleek silver collar necklace or large winged silver necklace will hold their own against this season’s bold jackets and boxy trousers. Alexis Bittar’s gold and resin cuffs are enormous and make a perfect statement piece alongside this trend as well.
